The ancient town of Fenghuang in the Hunan province of China is filled with a specific type of characteristic architecture called “hanging leg houses” (literal translation from Chinese). I certainly see why they got this name – the houses do seem like they’ve got their legs just dangling in the water!

The first thing I noticed about Tobermory as I got off the bus was the row of houses in all sorts of vibrant vibrant colours lined up along the main street. Such a cute little island town!

I don’t think I realized how beautiful Fenghuang was until I reflected upon my trip in retrospective. On one side I felt sad that such a stunning historic town has been tainted by tourism and transformed into a “commodity”, yet without the development of tourism, people like me would never have the chance to experience the magic. I only hope that Fenghuang will continue to survive and retain its authenticity, not being completely devoured by modernity and commercialization.
