Winter is one thing I definitely don’t miss in Waterloo. It could get brutally cold and you don’t want to stay out for more than a millisecond. I was not ready for the Canadian winter last year, especially having had three previous European winters that were extremely mild in comparison. Yet, strangely, I still love snow!

For the first 10+ years that I had been a resident of Toronto, I had taken its autumn foliage for granted, not fulling immersing in its awe until 2014. And you really don’t have to go too far to enjoy the colour-changing scenery – a 15-minute drive from Scarborough takes you to Moccasin Trail Park, right by the DVP, where you could find the rainbow bridge. The hidden pond in the midst of the park is also a pleasant surprise as it reflects, with perfect symmetry, the stupendous colours of the foliage. What a treat!

There is a rainbow tunnel off to the side of the DVP and since my visit, it has become one of my favourite places in Toronto. There is something magical about a rainbow that appears for perhaps merely a second as you drive by at 120 km/h, and it is even more magical when you venture into the hidden area to find its exact location. The tunnel was a short one, but standing at its entrance made me feel like the other side would be a whole different world. Maybe the rainbow would bring me to the pot of gold…!

I stepped into the city of Waterloo for the first time in 2005 and lived there for 5 years more or less. During my undergrad years, Waterloo was more like home to me than Toronto. Waterloo Park was one place that I should have visited more often. It’s a shame that we so often don’t explore the places we call home, ending up with regret when we miss it after we’re gone.

Jan 29, 2015 – [Thursday] Song Titles: Bridge Over Troubled Water

When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you

I’ll take your part
Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Where Am I?
