Feb 17, 2016 – [Wednesday] Travel Favs: Frozen statue

The river was frozen the first time I went to Ghent, but I did see an interesting scene. Don’t ask me how the information sign-holding statue of what seemed like a character from Greek mythology got stuck in the ice – that’s what I had wanted to know as well!

Having visited many Belgian cities, Ghent would have to be my second favourite after Brussels (sorry, no city takes the place of Brussels in my heart). The first visit left me speechless at its grandour and beauty, and the second and third awed me just the same. Some good things never change 🙂 (See the original photo in colour.)

Ghent is severely underrated as a travel destination and I would definitely have to say that I preferred it over the much more popular Bruges. This sculpture on a lamppost, depicting an angel/warrior/fighter slaying a dragon/snake/monster, was one of my favourite sights in Ghent and I am convinced that whoever this was, he must have been the guardian of the city.
