Cologne, Germany, taken on December 11, 2011
Cities always look stunning from high places, yet some high places have exceptional viewpoints that beat all others. This is my favourite photo from my trip to Cologne, which was more than three years. Three trains – an ICE in the middle and two red, regional trains – were either entering or exiting the train station. The trains cross the Rhine on the Hohenzollern Bridge to the other side, but from the top of the Dom they looked like tiny caterpillars moving slowly along a log or the trunk of a tree. For some reason, I just found that absolutely fascinating.
Was this taken from the top of the tower in Köln Dom?

Yes it certainly was taken there 🙂

Oh wow! Congrats on climbing the tower…wish I’d done it because, like you say, the best views are those from up high!

Thanks, the climb was brutal and I remember I was half-dead and sweating like mad by the time I got to the top, yet the chilly wind almost froze me! For the views, though, it was worth it!

Gosh I can imagine! My boyfriend tried to get me to climb it, but the thought of over 500 steps made me break into a sweat! Are there any places to stop on the way up for a breather, or is it straight up?

I think there were gaps between flights of stairs where you could stop to take a rest…I wouldn’t have been able to climb 500+ without resting!
