September 05, 2014 – Fishy kanji

At work, there is a chart of kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese) to depict the different types of seafood, especially fish, used in Japanese cuisine. Each one contains the “fish” radical (in rare cases another radical, such as the kanji for “shrimp”) with a different variable part to distinguish them all. Gotta say I learned a lot from this chart – there were so many of these characters that I’ve only seen for the first time!
