June 30, 2014 § Leave a comment

The literal translation of the word for “road” in Chinese (pronounced “ma lu”) is “horse road”. Apparently roads are called “horse roads” because in the old days, roads were commonly used by horse-drawn carriages. The name has stuck with popular usage and hence nowadays, we still call roads “horse roads” in Chinese.
